You bounce between real work and finish none of it

The focus failure nobody diagnoses, because every single thing you switch to is legitimate work.

Task bouncing is switching between genuinely necessary tasks so frequently that none of them reaches completion. It is distinct from ordinary distraction: no entertainment site is involved. The cost comes from attention residue, the part of your focus that stays behind with each unfinished task, and from the delay before you return: field research recorded interrupted work being resumed the same day after an average of 25 minutes 26 seconds, with more than two other tasks handled in between.

What it looks like on a Tuesday

You open the report. Before writing a sentence you check the doc it references. That reminds you the invoice is unsent, so you send it, which means opening the finance folder, where you notice last month's numbers need fixing. At 4pm the report has one paragraph and you have been working continuously for six hours. Ask what you did today and the honest answer is everything, which is why the pattern survives so long: it never once feels like slacking.

The mechanism

Sophie Leroy at the University of Washington identified attention residue in 2009: when you leave a task incomplete, part of your attention remains on it, and performance on the next task measurably drops. Her experiments showed the effect is strongest when the abandoned task had time pressure and no clean stopping point, which describes most knowledge work. Gloria Mark's field research at UC Irvine adds the other half. Her team shadowed information workers for hundreds of hours and found they spent an average of 11 minutes on a working sphere before switching or being interrupted, and that interrupted work, when it was picked up again the same day, had been left for an average of 25 minutes. Combine the two and the arithmetic is grim: ten switches in a day, each carrying residue and a long gap before return, and the productive hours are gone without a single frivolous website being opened.

Why blockers do nothing for this

Website blockers work from a list of sites you have declared bad. Your problem is that Gmail, Notion, Slack, Figma, and four different Google Docs are all good. A blocklist that catches your distractions would have to block your job. This is the structural reason people with this pattern try a blocker, find it useless within a week, and conclude that focus tools do not work for them. The tool was not wrong. It was answering a different question.

What actually helps

Three things, in order of how much they help. First, declare one task before you start and write it somewhere visible. Ambiguity about what you are doing right now is what lets the next tab feel reasonable. Second, capture instead of switching: when the invoice occurs to you, write the word invoice on a list and keep going. The urge is to handle it now because it takes two minutes, and the two minutes cost twenty-three. Third, use something that enforces the boundary rather than relying on you to notice you have crossed it, because by the time you notice you are already three tasks away.

Common questions

Is task bouncing the same as multitasking?

No. Multitasking usually means attempting two things simultaneously, which mostly does not happen because attention is serial. Task bouncing is rapid sequential switching between single tasks. Each switch is complete and deliberate, which is why it feels productive, and each one carries attention residue plus a resumption cost that Mark's published field data puts at about 25 minutes.

Why does it feel productive when it is not?

Because the feedback you get is action, not completion. Every switch produces a small visible output: an email sent, a doc opened, a comment answered. Your brain reads motion as progress. The absence of finished work only becomes visible at the end of the day or the end of the week, long after the behaviour that caused it.

Will a website blocker fix task bouncing?

Almost never. Blockers operate on lists of prohibited sites, and in this pattern every destination is legitimate work that would have to stay unblocked. The fix has to understand what you are working on right now, not which sites are categorically bad.
