Question 1

What is the main difference between Hugo and Freedom?

Accepted Answer

Freedom uses a static blocklist: you decide in advance which sites to block and it enforces that list. Hugo uses AI to evaluate every tab in real time against your session goal. The same website can be allowed in one Hugo session and blocked in another, depending on what you said you were working on. Freedom has 3.5M+ users and is the most established blocklist tool on the market. Hugo is the first Mac-native app to evaluate tabs contextually using AI rather than a list.

Question 2

Does Hugo actually work better than Freedom for Mac?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your problem. If you have a small, predictable set of sites that distract you, Freedom's blocklist approach works well. If your problem is context-switching between legitimate work, or getting pulled into sites that are sometimes relevant and sometimes not, Freedom cannot distinguish between those cases. Hugo can. Hugo also blocks desktop apps across your entire Mac, not just browser tabs. Freedom does not.

Question 3

Can Freedom block desktop apps on Mac?

Accepted Answer

No. Freedom blocks websites in your browser but does not block macOS desktop applications. Hugo blocks both browser tabs and desktop apps. If Slack, Notes, or any other app is off-task for your current session, Hugo handles it.

Question 4

How much does Hugo cost?

Accepted Answer

Hugo starts with a 14-day free trial: no card, just an email. After that, Hugo Pro is $12 a month or $99 a year (about $8.25 a month billed yearly) and includes unlimited sessions, all session modes including Hugo AI, Research, and Pomodoro, plus Insights. When the trial ends, sessions pause until you subscribe. Your insights, history and streaks stay.

Question 5

Does Hugo send my browsing data to the cloud?

Accepted Answer

To check a tab, Hugo uses the page address, its title and a few lines of text, never screenshots. When it reads a window in a Hugo AI session, the text is recognised on your Mac and the image never leaves it. Nothing is stored, and Hugo evaluates only the minimum it needs to make a focus decision.

Question 6

Is Hugo or Freedom better for students?

Accepted Answer

Hugo is particularly well-suited for students doing research. Because Hugo understands your session goal, it can allow Wikipedia for one session and block it for another, something Freedom cannot do. Students report that the justification loop (having to explain why you need a site to achieve your stated goal) is enough to break autopilot behaviour without locking them out of genuinely useful resources.

Question 7

Does Freedom work on Mac and Windows?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Freedom supports Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android with cross-device sync. Hugo is currently Mac-only with a Chrome extension companion. If you need Windows or mobile support, Freedom is the better choice.

Question 8

What is the justification loop in Hugo?

Accepted Answer

When you try to open a tab or app that Hugo determines may be off-task, Hugo does not simply block it. Instead, it asks you to explain why you need it to achieve the goal you stated at the start of your session. Rather than a generic 'are you sure?', it is a specific, contextual challenge grounded in your actual goal. Research on implementation intentions shows that having to articulate a reason before acting on an impulse significantly reduces automatic behaviour. Hugo applies this principle to every borderline tab.
