Every focus tool built in the last fifteen years works the same way: you guess which websites will distract you, add them to a list, and the tool enforces the list. This model has two problems that can't be fixed within its own logic - and AI is finally replacing it. Full disclosure: I built Hugo, an AI focus app. I'm going to lay out the argument honestly and let you decide.

The two problems blocklists can't solve

Problem 1
Over-blocking
You need a YouTube tutorial for the thing you're actually working on. Blocked. You need a Reddit thread for user research. Blocked. Every list eventually blocks something you need - there's no way around it.
Problem 2
Under-blocking
Your list only covers what you already know about. A friend sends you a link. You discover a new forum. A news story breaks. New distractions appear constantly - your list is always behind.

Make the list longer and you block more of what you need. Keep it short and new distractions slip through. There's no list length that solves both at once. The blocklist paradigm has a ceiling, and serious users hit it within weeks.

The spam filter analogy

Early spam filters were blocklists. You manually added addresses or keywords. It worked for a while. Then spammers adapted - new addresses, new keywords, new tactics. Your list was always behind.

Modern spam filters don't work that way. Gmail doesn't ask you to maintain a list of spam senders. It evaluates each email based on content, metadata, sender reputation, and patterns - then makes a contextual decision. Nobody maintains a spam blocklist anymore. The AI handles it, better than any human-curated list could.

The same shift is happening in focus tools
The question is shifting from "is this URL on a list?" to "does this URL help you do what you said you were doing?" Same website, different answer depending on your goal.

How AI blocking actually works

An AI website blocker doesn't use a list at all. You tell it what you're working on - "finish the Q1 report" or "research competitors for the pitch" - and that goal becomes the filter.

The evaluation flow (using Hugo as example)
You start a session and state your goal.
You work. The AI sits in the background until you open a new tab or switch apps.
When a new tab opens, the extension grabs the URL, page title, and a short text snippet.
That metadata is sent to an AI model (Gemini 2.5 Flash) along with your session goal.
The AI returns a verdict: allow, block, or prompt (ask you to justify).
If blocked, the tab closes. If ambiguous, you see a justification prompt. If allowed, nothing happens.

The entire round trip takes under a second. Critically: the AI never sees your screen, never takes screenshots, and never accesses your files. It receives only the URL, title, and a short text snippet - the same information visible in your browser tab bar.

The privacy question

Two approaches are emerging in AI focus tools, and they are not the same.

Approach A - Surveillance
Screen monitoring
Periodic screenshots sent to cloud AI for analysis. The AI sees everything on screen - documents, messages, email, personal content. This is surveillance, whatever the product claims to the contrary.
Approach B - Metadata only
Tab evaluation
Only the URL, page title, and a short text snippet. No screenshots, no screen recording, no file access. The same info visible in your tab bar.

Where AI blocking still falls short

AI makes mistakes
False positives (blocks something you need) and false negatives (misses something off-task). Accuracy is high but not 100%. A static blocklist is perfectly predictable.
Requires internet
The AI evaluation happens on a remote server. No connectivity, no full AI capability. Static blocklists work perfectly offline.
Higher cost
AI inference isn't free. Cold Turkey is $39 one-time. Hugo is $99/yr. The AI capability comes at a higher price point.
New category
Static blocklists have 15 years of track record. AI focus tools have months. The long-term patterns are still being established.

If your needs are simple - you just want to block Twitter and Reddit during work hours - a static blocklist is probably all you need. The AI approach earns its keep when your work is varied, your context changes throughout the day, and maintaining a list that covers everything without blocking too much becomes its own job.
